Electrical Controls Engineer

Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Electrical Controls Engineer with expertise in PLC programming and automation systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience developing, writing, and troubleshooting PLC code in Allen-Bradley (AB) / Rockwell Automation environments. This role will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing electrical control systems to improve machine performance, automation efficiency, and production reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and write PLC code using Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation platforms (RSLogix 5000, Studio 5000, ControlLogix, CompactLogix, etc.).
- Program, integrate, and troubleshoot HMI (Human-Machine Interfaces), VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and industrial automation systems.
- Develop and implement ladder logic, structured text, and function block programming to optimize machine operation.
- Design and maintain electrical control panels, schematics, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD or EPLAN.
- Perform troubleshooting and debugging of PLC and automation system issues on the production floor.
- Collaborate with maintenance, production, and engineering teams to ensure smooth integration of automation solutions.
- Optimize control systems for efficiency, safety, and reliability, following best practices in industrial automation.
- Assist in startup, commissioning, and testing of new automation systems and equipment.
- Maintain documentation, version control, and technical reports for PLC programs and control systems.
- Ensure compliance with NFPA 70E, NEC, UL, and OSHA electrical safety standards.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 3+ years of experience in PLC programming, electrical controls, and industrial automation.
- Proficiency in Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation PLCs (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix, SLC 500, etc.).
- Experience with HMI development (FactoryTalk View, Ignition, Wonderware, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of ladder logic, structured text, and function block programming.
- Hands-on experience with motor controls, VFDs, sensors, and industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, DeviceNet, Profibus, etc.).
- Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar electrical design software.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and mechanical drawings.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to work cross-functionally with production and maintenance teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with SCADA systems, robotics, or motion control.
- Knowledge of Siemens, Mitsubishi, or other PLC platforms.
- Certifications in Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation programming.
- Experience in automotive, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, or heavy industrial manufacturing.
