Production Supervisor – Machine Shop (5-Axis CNC)

Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Production Supervisor to lead 5-axis CNC machining operations in a high-precision machine shop. This role is responsible for overseeing production schedules, optimizing machining processes, ensuring quality standards, and managing a team of CNC machinists and operators. The ideal candidate will have experience in 5-axis CNC programming, tooling, and process optimization in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and coordinate daily machine shop operations with a focus on 5-axis CNC machining.
- Ensure production meets quality, efficiency, and on-time delivery goals.
- Troubleshoot CNC programming, tooling, and setup issues to minimize downtime and improve cycle times.
- Work with engineering and programming teams to optimize tool paths, feeds, and speeds for 5-axis machining.
- Enforce safety standards, operational procedures, and quality control measures in compliance with ISO 9001, AS9100, or other relevant standards.
- Train and mentor CNC machinists, operators, and setup technicians to enhance skill levels and productivity.
- Monitor and track KPIs (efficiency, scrap rates, downtime, machine utilization, etc.) and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure proper machine upkeep and preventative maintenance.
- Work with purchasing and inventory teams to ensure adequate material and tooling availability.
- Document and maintain work instructions, process sheets, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for CNC operations.
Qualifications & Skills:
- 5+ years of experience in a precision machining environment, with 3+ years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of 5-axis CNC machining, including programming, setup, and operation.
- Experience with CAM software (Mastercam, Siemens NX, PowerMill, etc.) and CNC controllers (Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, etc.).
- Understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), blueprint reading, and CMM inspection methods.
- Familiarity with high-precision machining for aerospace, automotive, medical, or industrial applications.
- Proficiency in Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and Continuous Improvement methodologies.
- Excellent leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends or overtime, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in Lean Six Sigma, ASQ Certified Manufacturing Engineer (CMfgE), or CNC programming.
- Experience with robotic automation and lights-out machining.
- Background in aerospace, medical device, or high-tolerance machining.
